You will also receive the sheet music for 'Papillon' for free (!) when you purchase this single. It consists of a 'lead sheet' with melody and chords in pdf format.
With an evocative, cinematic strings-led orchestration, the new original composition, written by Aitken for solo violin and the Scottish Session Orchestra, is the first lead track from her recently released debut solo jazz album ‘What Is This Thing Called Love?’. The instrumental was inspired, the musician says, “by the emotions - ‘butterflies’ - felt at the start of a new relationship”...hence the French- inspired title ‘Papillon’.
Autumn Antidote
The Parisian-sounding Gypsy Jazz waltz has a sunny, carefree nature and ‘Papillon’ has been described as a joyful, vivacious antidote to the onset of Autumn. “I wanted to meld Classical sensibilities with the freedom of Jazz - and to try and do it in three minutes!” says the Scottish performer... “and I hope the result is as refreshing for listeners as it was for the musicians performing it!” For aspiring players, the Scottish musician is also making the sheet music for ‘Papillon’ available via an exclusive download from Seonaid’s Bandcamp page.
To mark the release, the performer has been collaborating with emerging Dutch artist, and fellow Gypsy Jazz musician, Irene Ypenburg over an animated video for ‘Papillon’ which will premiere online during October. The release ties in with Bandcamp’s Music Friday promotion, supporting the many independent music artists currently unable to perform during COVID-19 restrictions on live music. Seonaid Aitken’s album ‘What Is This Thing Called Love?’ is now available to stream, download and purchase online. More information at
